The goal of SmartCause, Inc. is to end humanitarian crises like poverty, disease, and homelessness (among others) by promoting intelligent philanthropy. It is the belief of the makers of SmartCause™ that the best way to end these problems is by giving to the organizations that are best-equipped to solve these problems and the organizations with the best track record of spending money efficiently and effectively.

SmartCause assesses charities on a number of points, including (but not limited to) the breakdown of expenses between "program services," "management and general," and "fundraising," as well as monies spent on salaries and compensation, and efficiency relative to other organizations with similar goals.

SmartCause currently only reviews and lists assessments for charities that are registered with the US government as 501(c)3 organizations. While SmartCause catalogs all charities that are suggested on the site, SmartCause only assesses organizations that have filed a 990 annual tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the last 3 (three) years at a minimum, and that the charities have at least $25,000 in gross receipts annually during that time period.

Charities that meet the above qualifications will be considered for assessment. Charities will not necessarily be assessed in the order they are submitted for review. There are currently more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the United States. As such, SmartCause places an emphasis on listing the charities people are most interested in donating to and charities that are making the maximum impact with donations.
SmartCause is a Christian organization that is dedicated to promoting Christian goals. SmartCause does NOT require that charities listed on the site be Christian charities or affirm any faith in God whatsoever. SmartCause recognizes that Christian organizations do not hold a monopoly on philanthropic works and accordingly reviews and promotes both Christian organizations and organizations which are not faith-based.

So reviews remain consistent and objective, employees, volunteers, or members of an organization are not allowed to fill out that charity's SmartForm™ for assessment. Employees, volunteers, or members of an organization may respond to their organization's assessment, by filling out the charity response form. All responses will be reviewed by SmartCause. SmartCause may, in its sole discretion, post the charity's response if it is free of objectionable, vulgar, or obscene content and if it is found to be truthful and beneficial to help the public make an informed decision of where to donate their money.
